What is PTE?
The Pearson Test of English (PTE) is a completely computer based examination, that measures the language proficiency of people who want to study or work where English is used as a language of communication.
PTE is a System (computer) based assessment which focuses on real-life situations, where English used in academic / non-academic surroundings. It assesses English language as an integrated language skill system. The entire test is based on this concept of integrated existence of language skills, and students will have to go through a variety of accents and academic language, as the students are sure to get exposed and encounter at English-speaking higher education institutions.
A sophisticated and standardized numerical scale, ranging from 10 to 90, that is used as a Global Scale of Assessing English Language Skills, is used to report the scores. The Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR), has established a common reference framework, to assess the Language Proficiency more precisely, with which, the PTE Scoring pattern suits well.
There are two types of the PTE test: PTE Academic and PTE General.
The Pearson Test of English ~ Academic, an English Language Proficiency Assessment Test, is designed to assess the readiness, accuracy and expertise in using English Language as a means of Communication, by the non-native English speakers, who look forward to participate in a university-level courses and programmes, where English is the instruction language. The Academic mode of this test is designed with keeping the interests of Universities, Government and other Educational Institutions, for a precise assessment of exact levels of their Language Skills, as they have to enter the English-speaking academia world.
PTE General (initially developed by The University of London and so was formerly known as the London Tests of English) is International English Language Skill Assessment Test, for speakers of English as a foreign language (EFL). Developed by Pearson Language Tests and administered by Edexcel, PTE General Tests are accredited by QCA, the Qualification and Curriculum Authority.
Theme-based exams designed to test how well a learner can communicate in authentic and realistic situations – mostly non-academic, PTE General Tests are usually for the emigration purposes. As such, they use a lot of real-life scenarios / situations, rather than grammatical exercises. As in the PTE Academic, they test the expertise of using all the four skills of English Language ~ reading, writing, listening and speaking.
